Instructor, Lourdes, came to the US from Guatemala where she worked in an electronics store and dreamed of going to college. Unfortunately the drug czars demanded more protection money, which they could not afford and she was forced to flee Guatemala with her husband and young daughter. After she arrived in the US she was lonely and depressed without her friends and family until she met the people of The Welcome Project. At Welcome she has learned to love art and sewing. Now she has so many friends at Welcome, and she has started to dream about college again.

Instructor, Zoila is from Guatemala. She had to leave because it was becoming very dangerous. She moved to the United States to be with her daughter and her family. When she was a little girl her mom used to sew. She taught Zoila how to sew but she didn’t get to do it much since she had to do other work so her mom could sew and support the family. After she got older she forgot about sewing until she came to the Welcome Project. There she had a chance to sew again and make new friends. She is so happy and thanks God each day for the Welcome Project.

The Welcome Project is a social enterprise that trains our newest neighbors in fabrication and art skills as well as store management while bringing new life to the business district of Camp Washington, Cincinnati. The Welcome Project works out of two storefronts next door to Wave Pool and is a collaboration between Wave Pool and Heartfelt Tidbits. Workshops, support sessions, and artistic outreach for immigrants, refugees, and the Camp Washington community are currently offered by this budding enterprise.
